Froxy Review

Froxy is a new name in the proxy provider market, so is it worth trusting? Here is our exploration of it, and we believe that by the end you will have a clear judgment.

The Froxy proxy service is one provider that has been on my radar for a while now. I have had to take a look at it albeit briefly without looking deep into it. If you visit the website of this service, all looks well, the copy is nicely written and all of the information on the website points to one thing — it offers proxies that work.

However, more often than not, the effectiveness of a proxy service and its actual performance differ from what you see on their website. It is for this reason I seek to review Froxy and its proxy offering.

First, this provider is a small to mid-level provider and that is the customer base it caters for. Froxy proxy service provider is owned by Wergames OÜ, a company based in Estonia. This proxy service was introduced in 2020 and has since then catered to a good number of proxy services.

From the information on their website, it is not clear whether they have big businesses that use their proxies, and with the size of their proxy pool and from the result of my performance test, this is highly unlikely.

Froxy Types

It is becoming common practice for a provider to offer more than one proxy type and Froxy is not an exception. It offers 3 types of proxies that I will want to condense into 2 as the 3 classifications do not only make sense to us as an audience but even they as the producers can’t explain them.

Residential Proxies

Residential proxies are their most treasured and popular proxies — and they have a pool with 8 million IP addresses in it. These proxies are best used for web scraping tasks including price monitoring, social monitoring, SEO, and marketing research. This is because the network is a rotating proxy that will switch IPs frequently for you. This frequent change of IP is what you need to evade anti-bot systems that track and block IPs that send them too many requests.

While their IPs are undetectable, you shouldn’t use them for session management as they are not built for that since they change IP and session too quickly. This can lead to suspicion on websites that you are logged in. The only form of session management supported is anyone that you have to maintain a session for a short period of time, let’s say 20 minutes. Anything longer than that is not advisable. I won’t recommend it for large projects but for small projects.

They claim to offer two types of residential proxies — regular residential proxies and fast proxies. They are basically the same, have almost the same pricing, share the same pool, and even most features. So don’t let them deceive you. Below is the pricing section of their residential proxies.

Residential Proxies for Froxy

In terms of pricing, I will say their residential proxies are cheap when you compare the price per GB with what is obtainable in the market. Top providers like Bright Data, Oxylabs, and Smartproxy peg theirs at an average of $10 monthly. And smaller providers like Hydraproxy and Proxy-cheap have theirs at $5 per GB. So their starting at $6.43 is competitive. But how about the minimum monetary commitment? All of the providers mentioned do allow you to purchase a minimum of 1GB but Froxy forces you to pay for 7GB minimum. To me, this is a flop on their part that needs to be addressed.

Mobile Proxies

Aside from residential proxies, you can also purchase rotating mobile proxies from this service. Their mobile proxies differ from their residential proxies because they route your requests via mobile IP addresses specifically. This gives your requests the much-needed mobile flavor to look like they originated from a mobile device.

However, I do have my reservations about their mobile proxies especially on the size of their pool. It looks more like Froxy is not being truthful about the actual number of IPs in its pool. It mentions it has 8 million IPs on its homepage. You will see that same claim on both its residential and mobile proxies — from experience, this is more like a placeholder, and the number of IPs in the respective pools is far smaller. And that is the reason I will recommend this provider to only small proxy users.

Those with mid-scale projects are better off using a provider with a large pool of mobile IP addresses.

Mobile Proxies for Froxy

In terms of pricing, its mobile proxies cost slightly more than its residential proxies. Its price per GB  is $9 which makes it cheaper than most rotating mobile proxies. However, unlike other providers that do not have minimum monetary commitment, there is a $45 lower limit you must purchase and that will give you 5GB.

Residential Proxy Features

What are some of the features included in their residential proxies and the specific details you need to know before making an informed purchase decision?

Support Rotating and Sticky Sessions

Let’s start with their sticky sessions. This feature will help you maintain a session for up to 20 minutes. But this 20 minutes is not a guarantee — it's a possibility and when an IP becomes inactive before the 20 minutes elapses, you get assigned a new IP and your session terminates and another one starts. Because you maintain a session here, you can use it for tasks that require you to stay logged in. However, please do remember the 20-minute upper limit. If you need to stay logged in for periods longer than 20 minutes, then you are better off using static residential proxies — and Froxy does not offer such — I recommend Proxy-Seller.

For their rotation ports, IP is randomly but frequently switched for you. It is the kind of setup you need for web scraping and other forms of botting that do not require you to maintain sessions. The advantage of using this is that your IPs get changed frequently to avoid exceeding request limits that will get you blocked by websites because of too many requests. However, you need to be mindful of this setup and don’t use it for managing accounts as the frequent change of IP is suspicious and could get your account banned.

Good Location Coverage

Froxy might not have gotten things right from the aspect of their IP pool size. However, it has extensive location support. That is, you can get IPs from most countries in the world. At first, this looks like a good thing, right? Well, it is to some extent, especially if you don’t have a specific country you need IPs from — but just need to rotate IPs across different locations to avoid detection. But when you need to get the IPs from a specific location, you need to be careful.

This is because its pool size is just 8 million and it supports over 200 locations. So how many IPs does it have in your required location and how many are available for your usage? Generally, those with small projects don’t have to worry much about this, it is those with mid-large scale projects that should worry.

Residential Proxy Performance

How well does Froxy perform in real-world usage and how does it correlate with the impression the providers give? Spoiler alert: the proxies work, no doubt, but the key performance indicators are not impressive.

Proxy IP Geo Test

While the size of a pool is important, the distribution in terms of locations is also important. For most popular providers, you get details on the spread of their IP addresses and the estimated number for each of the popular countries. In the case of Froxy, there is nothing like that. Instead, what you get is the number of ISPs supported in each location.

Froxy Location

The only explanation for this is that the number of IPs in most of the geo-locations is small. Since this information is not public, you have to thread carefully when you decide to use their geo-targeting feature. Proxy seems to have more ISPs supported in the US than everywhere else and for this reason, you should be able to use geo-targeting for their US location. For other locations, I will advise against doing so except you contact their support and make enquiries.

Proxy Success Rate Test

The first test result I will show you here is the success rate test. I needed to find out the success rate of their network when used for web scraping. And my setup was pushing it to the edge and see how well it would perform. To do this, I sent over 300 concurrent requests multiple times to some popular websites from my test location in Los Angeles and recorded the responses. Below is the result I recorded for this, your result might be different especially if you don’t send concurrent requests.

Proxy Success Rate Test of Froxy

Average success rate: 72.1%

As you can see from the above, the average success rate is around 70%. Is this something you can deal with? Retrying about 30% of your requests won’t cause you to waste more money, and time, and miss some crucial data? But then, remember I sent 300 concurrent requests to see how well it scales. If you don’t send that number of requests, you might have a different result that will work for you. But for those that multithread and need a performant beast, Froxy is just not the provider they seek.

Proxy Response Time

Another key performance indicator I tested is the response time — the time it takes between sending a request and getting a response. And can I say I was impressed with that? Again, NO. In fact, it is one of the worst performances I have experienced while testing out proxies on my watch list. To put things into perspective and help you see how slow Froxy residential proxies are compared to other providers in the market, I included the responses I recorded from other providers too. Below is the graph showing the response time of residential proxies from the popular providers including Froxy.

Proxy Providers Response Time

As you can see above, Froxy does not just take the position of the second slowest provider, but the actual response time is not something you will be ready to deal with — 3.65 seconds. Read that again and tell me if you can be patient enough to wait for 3.65 seconds per request for a project that will send 1000 web requests.

Unique IP Testing

The recommendation is for you to rotate IPs in web scraping. But what if your provider keeps repeating the same set of IPs? You will get blocked by your target website the moment you exceed the request limit. I sent 500K web requests without configuring any parameter to see how many duplicate IPs will be used.

And the result for Froxy wasn’t impressive or even good at all. The duplicate IPs in percentage for Froxy is 80.56%. This means the unique IP percentage is only 19%. This won’t be an issue for small projects, but for mid-scale to large-scale projects, you will be getting repeated IPs reassigned to you enough to get you blocked.

IP Duplication Rate by Proxy Providers

From the above, you can see how Froxy performs in comparison with other popular names in the proxy market. As you can see, the best performers here are Bright Data, Soax, Smartproxy, and Oxylabs. Interestingly, they have some of the largest proxy pools in the market too with Bright Data having 72 million, Soax over 100 million, Smartproxy 40 million, and Oxylabs, 100 million.

How to Use Froxy

How easy is it to use the Froxy residential proxies? The answer is simple — as easy as it is to use any other proxy service. All you need to use their proxies is a proxy host, port, username, and password, all of which can be called proxy credentials and can be found in their dashboard. This is of course, after registering an account and purchasing a plan from them.

The use of a username and password for authentication is optional. You can also use IP authentication or whitelisting. But that will mean you finding out the IP address of the devices you will use the proxies on and registering them. With that, you don’t have to provide a username and password for authentication.

I will advise against using their geo-targeting option, except, of course, the country you need IPs from is one of the top supported countries. This is because even though you can get IPs from them, you can’t get enough for use at a reasonable scale. If you have to use geo-targeting, you are better of using one of the alternatives mentioned at the end of this review.

Customer Support

One area I like this provides is in its customer support. I am aware there is a live chat support and email support. But how effective is that and how long do I have to wait to get a reply from their live chat support? I tried it out to see how responsive they were. I contacted them via the live chat support feature on the 2nd of January 2024 at 6:10 AM and got a response in less than one minute — yes, you read them — one minute. I also had to try it later in the day and the response was also fast.

Customer Support of Froxy

On the Froxy website, there is a help page where you can find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions. I won’t say this page is exhaustive but can be said to be comprehensive to some extent and in situations where you need help, you can contact their support team.

Source of IP Addresses

Froxy has over 8 million IP addresses in its pool. But where do they get their IPs from? I know for a fact that they do not own the IP addresses they route requests through and that they make use of a P2P network. But the specific details are hidden from the public. Is their network ethical or there is some malicious activities going on? I don’t have the actual details. If you are not comfortable using a service that is not open with the source of its IP address, then you can take a look at Bright Data.

Do We Recommend Froxy

I am not impressed with the size of Froxy's residential IP pool. With just 8 million IP addresses, this should only be used for small-scale projects. Also, you should only use them if you do not have performance expectations, as their speed is slow, and the unique IP rate is also very small.

The success rate is also not impressive at an average of 70%. With these, you can tell this provider is not one I will recommend for a project at a reasonable scale — mid or large projects — just for small projects. For mid to large-scale projects, take a look at one of our Froxy alternatives below.

Alternatives to Froxy

Below are some of our recommended alternatives to Froxy.

SoaxI recommend this if you want a high success rate and faster speed. This provider can be expensive as its pricing starts from $99 monthly. But you will use a fast network that performs excellently well. It has millions of IPs in its pool and offers one of the best extensive location support in the market.

Soax for as a Froxy Alternatives

Bright Data I recommend this if you want better control over your sessions. You can either use its highly anonymous proxies that change IPs after every request or its session proxies that allow you to choose the time to maintain a session before switching IPs. Bright Data is actually our recommended provider for web scraping. And especially the best for large-scale web scraping projects.

Bright Data for as a Froxy Alternatives

SmartproxyMy cost-effective alternative to Froxy. You get a higher performance at a cheaper price, making it quick and great for those with a small budget but looking for great performance. It has over 40 million IPs, one of the fastest speeds, and great performance too. Its location support is also quite extensive.
